A twin city holiday in Edinburgh and Oslo?
As a travel journalist with more than 20 years of experience, I find Edinburgh and Oslo two of the most appealing capital cities in Europe. Both are attractive to look at, and both have a wealth of attractions that you simply won’t find anywhere else.
These two northern European capitals could theoretically make for a good two centre holiday. Preferably in the summer, obviously – the weather makes them considerably less appealing in January or February.
However, the issue with such a plan is connecting Scotland and Norway’s capitals…
Five great things to do while you’re in Edinburgh
Discover the Old Town’s underground vaults on a walking tour.
- Follow the Da Vinci Code on a Rosslyn Chapel day tour.
- Learn dozens of stories on a guided walk of the Royal Mile and Old Town.
- Explore the best places to eat in Edinburgh on a food tour.
- Let an expert guide take you around Edinburgh’s Harry Potter locations.
Highlights of Edinburgh and Oslo
A perfect day in Edinburgh might include a literary pub tour, a picturesque walk through Dean Village and Edinburgh Castle. There’s plenty to do around Edinburgh Castle – including the National Museum of Scotland – if castle tickets have sold out, too.
In Oslo, the waterfront Aker Brygge area gives you the Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park and salmon industry museum the Salmon.
You can also take the Bygdoy Peninsula ferry to learn about Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen in the Fram Museum, or Thor Heyerdahl’s epic Pacific voyage at the Kon-Tiki Museum.
Books set in Edinburgh
If you want to get a good feel for Edinburgh before visiting, it’s worth reading a book or two set there. Options include…
- Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie – an inspirational teacher changes lives with equal parts comedy and tragedy.
- The Heart of Midlothian – arguably Sir Walter Scott’s finest work.
- Ian Rankin’s Rebus books – gripping, grouchy detective novels.
- Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting series – for the city’s gritty side.
- David Nicholls’ One Day – an innovative and emotive romance, tracked by the same date each year.
