Planet Whitley is written by David Whitley — a travel journalist with more than 20 years of experience covering destinations across six continents.

David’s work appears regularly in some of the world’s leading travel publications, including the Telegraph, Sunday Times, Independent, National Geographic Traveller UK, and Travel Weekly. He is also a long-standing contributor to Traveller, the travel section of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age — where he also writes the weekly travel quiz.

His particular specialisms are Australia and New Zealand, the United States, and family travel in the UK and Europe. He first moved to Australia in 2001, spent five years there (including editing a magazine for backpackers), and has returned once or twice a year ever since. He knows the country’s odd corners better than most Australians do.

David is based in Sheffield, England, and travels extensively with his wife and two children — which shapes much of the family-focused content you’ll find here.

What you’ll find on this site

Planet Whitley is a place for honest, practical travel guides — the kind that tell you what something actually costs, how long it actually takes, and whether it’s actually worth your time. There’s a particular focus on:

  • Getting the best value at popular attractions
  • Family travel across the UK, Europe, Australia, and the USA
  • Road trips and destination guides with real, useful detail
  • Honest reviews that don’t pretend everything is wonderful

The guides draw on David’s decades of professional experience, his regular trips to Australia, and regular family adventures closer to home.
