I’ve visited Perth in Western Australia numerous times over the years. These five places are amongst the spots I recommend if you want to enjoy the city as much as I have.
Kings Park – city views and Botanic Gardens
Kings Park, long Perth’s crowning glory, is a majestic four square kilometres of green space perched above the Swan River. Large tracts are left as semi-wild native bushland, laced with walking tracks, while the sections with more hands-on maintenance include a treetop walkway and the Western Australian Botanic Gardens.

Perth Mint – watch gold being poured
Before the mining boom in the north, Western Australia’s wealth was spurred by gold. The Perth Mint is where most of it was processed, and is now home to an exhibition about the gold rush history. There’s also the world’s largest collection of gold bars on display, while gold-pouring demos show a bar melted down in a furnace, put in a mould, dipped into water and formed into a bar again.
Why book The Perth Mint Heritage Tour & Gold Pour?
- 🏛 Explore the historic Perth Mint, Western Australia’s first branch of the Royal Mint
- 👣 Heritage guided tour includes displays on gold mining, coin-making, and mint history
- 🔥 Witness a live **gold pour** demonstration — see molten gold turned into bullion
- 📜 Entry includes access to the gold bullion display and coin collection galleries
- ⭐ Highly rated: visitors commend the engaging guides, immersive displays, and fascinating history
- ✅ Mobile ticket accepted; free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start
Scarborough Beach – the sunset spot
Scarborough Beach, a genuinely stunning strip of dune-backed white sand with an engaging clutch of cafés, has been given a multi-million dollar makeover. Key additions have been a playground, a top drawer skatepark and a new open air swimming pool for those that don’t fancy a dip in the ocean. The general contouring and cleaning up of public areas have added to the appeal.
Most importantly, there are plenty of bars and places to eat, making it a fabulous spot to catch the sunset.

Rottnest Island – quokkas, cycling and snorkelling
The concept of the Quokka Selfie has given a new lease of life to Perth’s long-standing favourite escape, Rottnest Island. The absurdly cute marsupials can be easily found nuzzling around the cafés and shops of the main settlement, but the main appeal of the island hasn’t changed – hop on the Rottnest Express ferry, hire a bike, grab your snorkel and pedal round to whichever one of several stunning beaches tickles your fancy.
Why book the Rottnest Island Bike & Snorkel Tour?
- 🚤 Includes round-trip ferry transfer from Perth or Fremantle to Rottnest Island
- 🚴 Bike hire is provided so you can explore the island at your own pace
- 🤿 Guided snorkeling session with gear provided (mask, snorkel, fins)
- 🌊 Swim in clear reefs and secluded bays, spotting marine life and underwater beauty
- ⏱ Typically a full-day experience (often 8–9 hours) including transfer, biking, snorkeling, and return
- ⭐ Highly rated — praised for scenic views, marine life, and flexible self-guided portions
- ✅ Mobile ticket accepted; check cancellation policy and seasonal departure times
The QT Hotel – and its rooftop bar
The reliably cool QT offers leather-padded wardrobes, freestanding baths surrounded by black marble and black cockatoo wallpaper in the executive rooms. Elsewhere, there’s video art and arresting designer furniture in the lobby, plus an 18th floor rooftop bar with superlative views out over the city and Swan River.
