Linz in Austria is the closest major city to Cesky Krumlov, but the best transport option isn’t obvious.
Getting to Cesky Krumlov
The Bohemian town of Cesky Krumlov is one of the most attractive destinations in Central Europe. Positioned in a loop of the Vltava River, surrounded by green hills and with gorgeous Renaissance-painted buildings, Cesky Krumlov is no longer a great secret. Many arrive there by day trip, or take the train from Prague.

However, the nearest airport to Cesky Krumlov isn’t in Czechia. It’s over the Austrian border in Linz.

Trains to Cesky Krumlov from Linz
It is possible to get from Linz to Cesky Krumlov by train, but don’t expect an express service. There are no direct trains running on the route. You’ll need to change somewhere, usually Velesin, and the journey takes at least two-and-a-half hours.
Buses from Linz to Cesky Krumlov
This is one of those rare journeys where it is better and quicker to go by bus rather than train. According to Busbud, the direct Flixbus bus service from Linz to Cesky Krumlov takes around an hour and twenty minutes. Tickets are cheap, too – I was quoted €12, booking one week in advance.
Private tours from Linz to Cesky Krumlov
The posh option, though, is to take a private tour from Linz to Cesky Krumlov. These give you the comfort of a chauffeur-driven car, picking you up from your Linz hotel. They’re expensive for two people – costing from €255 each. But the more people you have in the group, the cheaper it works out per person.
