How to visit the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign without using a taxi

If you’re visiting Las Vegas, getting a photo at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a time-honoured tradition.

Alas, getting there isn’t as easy as it seems—especially if you’re staying mid-Strip. The sign is located on Las Vegas Boulevard South, past Mandalay Bay, and walking there in the desert heat can take 30–40 minutes from many hotels. Taxis and rideshares aren’t cheap either, especially with traffic.

The smart alternative is to book a hop-on hop-off bus tour that stops right by the sign—and lets you explore more of the city for the same price. Or, if you play it cleverly, less.

Why the Las Vegas sign is tricky to reach on foot

The Las Vegas sign sits in the median strip of a busy road, about a 10-minute walk south of Mandalay Bay. There’s no shade, limited pedestrian access, and the walk isn’t pleasant—especially in high temperatures. Uber and taxi rides to the sign can easily cost $15–$25 one way, depending on where you start from.

That’s a lot to pay just for one photo stop.

Use the hop-on hop-off bus instead

The Big Bus Las Vegas Hop-On Hop-Off Tour includes a dedicated stop for the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. You’ll be dropped off just a few feet from the photo spot and can hop back on the next bus when you’re done.

While I’m usually no fan of hop-on, hop-off buses, you can make this one work well for you. The bus runs a full loop of key Las Vegas highlights along the Strip and Downtown. You can see the sign and take in several other Las Vegas attractions, without paying for a series of cab fares.

What else you can see on the same ticket

The Big Bus tickets include unlimited rides for 1 or 2 days, depending on which option you choose. Stops include:

  • 🎰 Caesars Palace & Bellagio
  • 🎡 The LINQ and High Roller
  • 🎭 Luxor & Excalibur
  • 🎲 Fremont Street Experience
  • 🌆 Arts District and downtown casinos

The full Red Route loop takes around 2 hours, although you can expect to spend a fair amount of that time stuck in traffic. The buses are open-top, however, so work well for photos.

A budget-friendly solution? Las Vegas Big Bus ticket prices

As I say, I am not generally impressed with hop-on, hop-off buses. I tend to recommend a food walking tour instead.

The Las Vegas option isn’t notably better than those in other cities. And with tickets costing from $57, it’s unusually expensive.

If you’re not bothered about getting a photo at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, I would definitely not recommend buying a Big Bus ticket.

However, if you do want to see the sign, you can make the Las Vegas hop-on, hop-off bus work for you. Combine it with attractions in Downtown Las Vegas and on the Strip, you can save significant money on taxi or Uber fares.
