Seven Magic Mountains is a striking art installation in the Nevada desert – but it’s tricky to get to without a car.
What is Seven Magic Mountains?
Seven Magic Mountains is a location-specific art installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. It is a series of brightly-painted limestone boulders, arranged into towers. They look a little like chunks of chicken on skewers, coloured in with giant fluorescent marker pens.

Where is Seven Magic Mountains
Seven Magic Mountains is in the Jean Dry Lake, Nevada. This is roughly 21 miles to the south of the Las Vegas Strip, along Las Vegas Boulevard S. Depending on traffic, the drive from Las Vegas to Seven Magic Mountains should take around 28 minutes.
If driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, this is a great last stop before arriving in Sin City.
Why visit Seven Magic Mountains?
The luridly-coloured rock stacks of Seven Magic Mountains would barely get noticed in a city setting. The bright yellows, pinks and oranges would blend in with the neon lights and general gaudiness of Las Vegas.
What makes it such an arresting sight is the desert location. The juxtaposition of the brightly-painted rock towers and the stark, dusty desert scenery is jolting.
How to get to Seven Magic Mountains
Obviously, if you have your own vehicle, it’s pretty easy to drive out of the city to see Seven Magic Mountains. It’s by no means a must-see, but it’s a good excuse to get away from the Strip for a while and see something memorable.
If you’ve not got your own car, however, seeing Seven Magic Mountains is a bit trickier. Getting in a taxi, Uber or Lyft just to see Seven Magic Mountains would be a needlessly expensive detour, while there is no public transport option.
Seven Magic Mountains tours
The other option for getting to Seven Magic Mountains is to take a tour. There are several options available, and it’s largely a case of what other attractions you want to include in the package.
One quick trip combines the California desert and Las Vegas sign. A half day outing combines Seven Magic Mountains and the Hoover Dam. And a more adventurous option passes by on the way to riding ATVs through the desert.
