Inside the Little Museum of Dublin: what to see
All visits include a place on the Famous Dublin Welcome, a 29-minute guided tour led by the museum’s guides. The tour is presented in a comedic, storytelling format and covers the history of Dublin through the twentieth century. The entire permanent collection was assembled from donations made by the people of Dublin; no items were purchased.
The ground floor houses the museum’s reception and bookshop (The Little Shop of Dublin), alongside an exhibition on the Golden Age of Dublin, focusing on the work of artist James Malton, who documented the city at the height of its Georgian splendour in the 1790s.
The first floor contains the permanent collection, where the guided tour begins and ends. The collection covers Dublin’s political, cultural, and social history from 1900 to 2000, with artefacts, photography, letters, and objects connected to events including the 1916 Easter Rising, the Irish War of Independence, and later decades of the twentieth century. Items on display have included a lectern used by US President John F. Kennedy during his 1963 visit to Ireland, from which visitors may have their photograph taken.
The second floor is home to two permanent exhibitions. The Editor’s Room is a recreation of the Irish Times newsroom as it appeared under the editorship of R. M. Smyllie (1934–1954), and includes Smyllie’s original typewriter, desk lamp, and front pages from the period. U2: Made in Dublin is a fan-curated exhibition covering the career of the band over four decades, with artefacts including a Trabant car, an oversized Gibson Explorer guitar, a life-size sculpture of the MacPhisto character, signed albums, and rare photography.
The Little Walking Tour of St Stephen’s Green is an outdoor guided experience around the square and requires a separate booking. The Big Little Treasure Hunt is a self-guided map-based activity around St Stephen’s Green; maps are collected at the museum during opening hours and do not require a separate time slot booking.
