Why walk the Rhodes city walls?
One of the most enjoyable things to do in Rhodes Town – a great cruise destination to explore independently – is to walk along the city walls. There’s a 1km-long stretch of the ramparts that is open to the public for strolling along.
Walking the Rhodes city walls gives offers excellent views of the city. You can admire the terracotta roofs and rising spires, while looking down onto the sun decks and pools of hotels. On one side, you can look down into the former moat. On the horizon, you can see the sea and the cruise ships moored at the port.
There are also plenty of wildflowers and butterflies along the ramparts, although very few protective railings, so be careful where you tread.

The problem with walking the Rhodes city walls
However, walking the Rhodes city walls can be unnecessarily difficult. This is partly because there’s no official website for them giving information on opening hours and prices. Or, for that matter, where to buy tickets and where to start the walk from.
What tends to happen, therefore, is that tourists stand around outside the entrance gate looking horribly confused.
Rhodes city walls walk prices
Luckily, when I visited in May 2025, I asked.
First of all, it is not free to walk the Rhodes city walls. You need to buy a ticket at the Palace of the Grand Master, and this means standing in a queue with all the people trying to buy a ticket for the Palace.
Tickets for the Rhodes city walls walk cost €5 at the time of writing.
The entrance is on Cleoboulus Square next to the palace. The walk finishes at St John’s Gate – also known as the Red Gate or Kokkini Porta.
Rhodes city walls opening times
The most annoying thing about the Rhodes city walls walk, however, is that it is only open for a limited portion of the day. Exactly when it opens and closes seems to be at the whim of the people who check the tickets at the entrance gate.
However, I was told by the staff that the Rhodes city walls walk is usually open from midday to 3pm, Monday to Friday. I’d advise taking those times with a hefty fistful of salt, however.
What to do when the Rhodes city wall walk is closed?
Other options for things to do in Rhodes include day cruises, a food and wine tour with a 10 course lunch and a small group old town walking tour.
