Is it worth paying for English Heritage membership?
Entry prices for English Heritage sites, including Dover Castle, Stonehenge and Tintagel Castle, can seem extremely expensive. This is clearly a deliberate ploy to push visitors towards taking out annual English Heritage membership.
Membership gives free access to more than 400 sites across the country, and costs £82. That is, unless you get a special deal – there was a 25%-off Black Friday deal in November 2025, for example.
Whether that £82 is worth it depends on how many sites are near you (there are lots in the south of the country, not so many near me in Yorkshire). And, critically, whether you’re going to visit them with children.
Each member can take up to six children with them free of charge. Given the steep one-time entry fees, an adult member with two children is likely to recoup the cost of their membership by visiting just two or three sites within the year.
For an individual without children, I’d say English Heritage membership is worth it only if you’re planning to blitz a few sites in one year. For an individual with children, membership is a smart investment that will likely pay itself back within one school holiday. To me, it’s a no-brainer.
The real question is whether it’s worth renewing English Heritage membership after a year. That’s debatable, as you’re unlikely to go to many of these sites twice. I eventually renewed after I was offered 20% off the price. I’ll probably recoup the membership price visiting two sites in summer next year, even if I’ve ticked off most of the best ones near me.

How to get to Tantallon Castle
Tantallon Castle is located on the A198 coast road, approximately three miles east of North Berwick. Driving is the most direct method of travelling to the historic site.
For public transport, Eve Coaches operates the 120 bus route from North Berwick. The bus stops directly on the A198 outside the main car park, requiring a quarter-mile walk to the visitor centre.
Parking at Tantallon Castle
Free parking is available for visitors directly off the A198.
The main car park provides ample space for standard vehicles. From this point, visitors must walk approximately a quarter of a mile along a designated pathway to reach the visitor centre and the castle grounds.
How long to spend at Tantallon Castle
Visitors typically need between one and a half to two hours to explore Tantallon Castle.
This allows enough time to walk from the car park, navigate the outer defensive ditch, explore the extensive ruined curtain wall, and view the Bass Rock from the cliff edge.

Accessibility at Tantallon Castle
A small secondary car park located immediately next to the visitor centre provides two designated accessible parking spaces.
Accessing the main ruins requires navigating uneven grassy terrain, a wooden bridge over the ditch, and medieval stone surfaces. Carers accompanying visitors with disabilities receive free entry, which can be secured by booking online.
Inside / what to see at Tantallon Castle
The primary structure is the massive red sandstone curtain wall, which spans the promontory and served to protect the inhabitants from landward attacks.
Visitors cross a wooden bridge over a deep, rock-cut defensive ditch to enter the inner ward through the imposing mid tower.
Inside the courtyard, the remains of the domestic buildings, including the bakery and brewhouse, are visible alongside the north range.
The cliff edge provides unobstructed, panoramic views across the Firth of Forth to the Bass Rock, a steep volcanic island hosting a massive northern gannet colony.
Historical interpretation boards are positioned throughout the site to explain the castle’s role as the stronghold of the Douglas dynasty and its eventual destruction by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1651.
