Wadi Shuwayhah, Hatta: Canyon views, desert scenery & the Hajar Mountains

Hidden among the rugged Hajar Mountains, Wadi Shuwayhah reveals a surprising canyon landscape of palms, pools and sheer rock walls – a dramatic contrast to the desert scenery surrounding Dubai.

A simple game in a dramatic landscape

Masood studies the ground carefully, searching for a stone of just the right size.

He eventually finds the perfect one and bends to pick it up. Slotting it into the curve of one finger, he takes a short run before launching the stone as high and as far as he can.

The technique is excellent – exactly the kind of throw you would want from a boundary fielder in a cricket team.

The stone travels fast and high with a graceful arc, but it falls just short. It strikes the opposite canyon wall and tumbles down towards the glassy pools and palm trees below.

Discovering Wadi Shuwayhah

Wadi Shuwayhah is an extraordinary sight, largely because it appears so unexpectedly.

The journey begins among the desert dunes outside Dubai, before rough tracks lead into the rocky slopes of the Hajar Mountains.

As the route heads south-east from the city, the landscape alternates between two forms of spectacular emptiness.

First come the sweeping sand dunes. Then, as the dunes flatten, dark volcanic hills appear in the distance. Eventually the two landscapes merge into a vast, rubble-strewn terrain that feels almost lunar.

A canyon hidden in the desert

Then, suddenly, the earth drops away.

Pulling up beside the wadi, the canyon wall on the opposite side rises sharply into view – smaller than the famous cliffs of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but impressive nonetheless.

The real surprise comes when looking down into the valley below.

Date palm groves cluster along the canyon floor, while narrow stream beds wind through the greenery. It resembles the kind of idyllic scene that might appear in an overly optimistic desert painting.

For a moment, it is simply a place to stand and stare.

How to reach Hatta

Getting to Hatta is not entirely straightforward.

Although it is part of Dubai, reaching it requires leaving the emirate and travelling through neighbouring Sharjah.

Along the way, dunes sometimes appear littered with debris and abandoned buggy parts. The journey also briefly crosses into Oman, although border checks are often minimal and passports are rarely stamped.

It is within this oddly overlooked stretch of territory that Wadi Shuwayhah sits.

5 great Dubai experiences to book

The stone-throwing challenge

Masood’s failed throw quickly becomes an unspoken challenge.

Jackets are removed. Bags are set down. Everyone begins searching the ground for suitable stones.

Each person studies their chosen projectile carefully. It must be smooth enough to fly well but heavy enough to travel the distance.

Run-ups follow, and stones arc across the canyon – each one landing frustratingly short.

Attempts multiply rapidly. Second and third throws turn into twentieth and thirtieth tries.

The only reason every stone on one side of the canyon is not thrown across is simply because there are only four participants.

Finally reaching the other side

Eventually, Masood succeeds.

His stone lands on the opposite side, sending up a small cloud of dust as it hits the ground.

The moment feels oddly triumphant.
