What is the Tamar Bridge?
The Tamar Bridge is a pretty impressive suspension bridge, with a 335 metre main span. It was opened in 1962, then rebuilt for strengthening purposes between 1998 and 2001.

The Tamar Bridge crosses the Tamar River, which forms a substantial part of the border between Devon and Cornwall in South-West England. It connects Plymouth in Devon and Saltash in Cornwall.

Tamar Bridge tolls from Plymouth to Saltash
If crossing the Tamar Bridge from Plymouth to Saltash, you will pass toll booths on your way out of Devon. However, when travelling in a westward direction, there is no toll to pay on the Tamar Bridge.
The booths are there for those travelling the other way.
Tamar Bridge tolls from Cornwall to Devon
If you’re travelling from Cornwall to Devon – going easterly across the Tamar Bridge – then you do have to pay a toll.
At the time of writing in August 2025, the toll for crossing the Tamar Bridge from Saltash to Plymouth is £3. This is the price for two-axle vehicles weighing under 3.5 tonnes. This is basically most cars and vans.

Motorcyclists do not have to pay a toll.
Cash, card or tag?
The £3 toll for crossing the Tamar Bridge from Saltash to Plymouth is the cash or card fare. It’s possible to pay by cash or debit/ credit card – just make sure you’re in the right lane for the toll booths.

Paying with the Tamar Tag
The tag lanes are for vehicles equipped with the Tamar Tag. The prepaid Tamar Tag system is largely designed for locals, and allows holders to cross the Tamar Bridge at half the price.
