The world’s most famous wonky tower
For a piece of shoddy construction, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is extraordinarily popular. The globally-recognised icon is the bell tower of Pisa Cathedral, although no-one has come to take hilarious selfies of the Cathedral itself.
Most people are happy to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa from the outside. At any given daytime moment, you’ll have hundreds of people taking pictures of themselves pretending to hold it up.
However, it is also possible to go inside Tuscany’s most notorious tower and climb to the top.

The stabilisation of the Leaning Tower
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was reopened to visitors in 2001 and an 11 year stabilisation project. This work reduced the angle of the Tower’s tilt.
It also made it safe to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa again, and hundreds of thousands of people have done so since.
How many steps in the Leaning Tower of Pisa?
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is officially 58.36 metres tall, and leans at an angle of 5.115 degrees.
Absurdly, no-one seems to be able to agree on how many steps there are to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Opera Della Primaziale Pisana, the organisation that runs the Leaning Tower, gives two contradictory numbers on its own website. It’s either 251 steps or 273 steps.
Buying tickets for the Leaning Tower of Pisa
You can count for yourself whilst in Pisa, of course. But you’re almost certainly going to need to buy tickets in advance. Ordinarily, I’d say you’re fine buying third party tickets through sites such as Viator. However, there are numerous reviews suggesting that the climb times for visitors with third party tickets can get put back at short notice.
In this case, it’s better to go the official route with the Opera Della Primaziale Pisana.
Pisa Cathedral ticket options
There are several tickets available for the Pisa Cathedral complex. If you just want to climb the tower, tickets cost €20 at the time of writing.
However, combination tickets are available that cover the other buildings in the complex. To go inside the Cathedral, Baptistry, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo Museum and Sinopie Museum without climbing the tower, the price is €11. This is known as a Complete Visit ticket.
To go inside these buildings AND climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa costs €27. For this, ask for a Complete Visit + Tower ticket.
All prices are correct at the time of writing.
Timed tickets for the Leaning Tower of Pisa
Be aware that you will be given a set time for climbing the Tower. You can visit the rest of the complex at will before and after this time, but turn up late, and you’re not doing the climb.
If you want to explore beyond the Tower, try a Pisa food tour.
