Getting to Dortmund from Berlin
The German city of Dortmund doesn’t tend to be on the top tier list of places to visit in Europe. However, football fans wanting to visit Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park or the German Football Museum may disagree. Dortmund’s Christmas market also plays host to the world’s largest Christmas tree.
If Dortmund is your target, the best bet is to fly into Dusseldorf International Airport, about 70km away. However, if Dortmund is one of many stops on a trip around Germany, it may be worth looking into the Berlin to Dortmund train.
Berlin to Dortmund train times
According to train booking site Omio, there are several direct train services from Berlin to Dortmund every day. The first Deutsche Bahn train leaves Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 06.48, with other Intercity services leaving at 48 minutes past the hour for the rest of the day.
These quickest of these Berlin to Dortmund train services takes three hours and 22 minutes.
Berlin to Dortmund train ticket prices
So, the good news is that Berlin to Dortmund trains are relatively frequent. The bad news is that they’re also relatively expensive. Searching two weeks in advance, I found one way tickets costing from €48. Closer to the date of travel, they’re more expensive.
Flixtrain trains from Berlin to Dortmund
However, there is a budget alternative. European bus operator Flixbus has been offering train services in Germany since 2018, and it offers two daily services from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof.
These Fiixtrain services are not quick – the 08.28 service is quickest and takes 3h56m to reach Dortmund. However, the Flixtrain services from Berlin to Dortmund don’t take that much longer than Deutsche Bahn’s. More importantly, they are cheap. One way tickets cost from €23, and can be booked online.
