How to get on the Harry Potter Studios Tour when tickets have sold out

Harry Potter Studios Tour tickets often sell out. But there is often next day availability on packaged tours from London to the Warner Bros Studio.

Advance booking Harry Potter Studios Tour tickets

For many fans of JK Rowling’s schoolboy wizard, doing the Harry Potter Studios Tour is a highlight of a visit to London. In fact, the tour of the Harry Potter filming sets is so popular that it regularly sells out well in advance. This is fine if you come prepared and book the Harry Potter studios tour tickets a few weeks in advance, less so if you want to do it in the next couple of days.

Where is the Harry Potter Studios Tour?

First up, there’s officially no such thing as the Harry Potter Studios Tour. The preferred name of the attraction is The Warner Bros Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter. Frankly, you can see why this gets shortened.

The second thing to know is that the Warner Bros Studio Tour is not actually in London. It’s in Leavesden, Hertfordshire. This is near Junction 6 of the M1, and a 22 mile drive from central London. It is not uncommon for this drive to take an hour due to traffic conditions.

Harry Potter Studios Tour ticket prices

At the time of writing, tickets for the Making of Harry Potter cost £53.50. However, during busy periods – particularly the school holidays and weekends – these tickets can be like gold dust.

When I checked, there was some ticket availability for the next week, but not the next day or the next weekend.

What to do when Harry Potter Studios Tour tickets have sold out

Therefore, if you want to get tickets for the Harry Potter Studios Tour at short notice or on a certain day, you may have to go for a slightly more expensive workaround.

Several tour companies offer Harry Potter Studios tours that include coach transfers from London. Some of these operators pick up at London hotels, others from a centralised point such as the Victoria Coach Station.

How much do Harry Potter Studios tours from London cost?

Prices for these Harry Potter Studios tours from London vary slightly by operator, but generally start at around £100. This includes the transfer to the Warner Bros Studios, plus the Making of Harry Potter tour tickets.

More importantly, there is almost always availability on these tours – even when the tickets on the official Warner Bros Studio Tour London site have sold out. If you want to pick a date and time to do the Harry Potter Studios Tour – particularly at short notice – then you have a better chance of getting tickets as part of a packaged tour from London.

When I looked, several operators of these packaged tours had next day tickets available. Search for yourself here.

London to Watford Junction train times and prices

Getting to the Warner Bros Studios by public transport involves a 20 minute train journey from London Euston to Watford Junction, then taking a shuttle bus, which is included as part of the entry ticket. Single tickets for the train journey cost £12.80 – so it’s £25.60 for a return from London.

This obviously works out a little cheaper than booking the tour with transfers from London, but that’s a moot point when there’s no ticket availability on the Making of Harry Potter tour.
