Is Omega Mart in Las Vegas worth the ticket price?

Omega Mart in Las Vegas is large scale, weird and tricky to review. But are the (expensive) tickets worth it? Well, arguably yes.

What is Omega Mart in Las Vegas?

Omega Mart in Las Vegas is a large scale immersive art installation created by the Meow Wolf collective. It is inside the Area 15 entertainments and events centre just to the west of the Las Vegas Strip.

At first glance, Omega Mart is a supermarket. But closer inspection of the products on the shelves and promotional offers reveal that something very weird is going on. Then, whether through the fridge door or the tent in the camping section, you pass into a hidden world that is a sensual assault and slowly tells a story of a desert town that may have succumbed to alien control.

How much do Omega Mart tickets cost?

Standard tickets for Omega Mart cost $54, although Nevada residents pay $44 and cheaper deals can sometimes be found online.

This is obviously pretty expensive, although roughly in line with many other Las Vegas entertainment experiences. And whether the ticket price is worth paying will largely depend on personal tastes and circumstances.

Is Omega Mart worth it? The case against

If you’re on a fairly tight budget, then Omega Mart is probably not going to be worth it. It’s still cheaper than the cheapest Cirque du Soleil shows, but it still represents a significant blowout in a city that has a vast array of options to spend your money on.

There are also some people who will visit Omega Mart and simply not get it. The experience is difficult to pigeonhole and explain. Some visitors will find it very weird, and not in a good way. Pretty much everyone will come out thinking: “What the hell have I just seen?” For some people, that’s not a good thing.

Is Omega Mart worth it? The case in favour

For other people – including myself – “What the hell have I just seen?” is a good thing. Omega Mart is profoundly strange, to the point of being borderline unsettling. To explain in further detail what’s inside would be to spoil the surprises, but suffice to say, there’s a journey of discovery once inside.

More to the point, as art installation, it shows terrific boldness and ambition. It is visually arresting at almost every turn, sometimes befuddling and often pretty trippy.

The level of detail is exceptional, too. It pays to read labels and stickers closely, and to delve into every room. Omega Mart is executed with a highly impressive degree of skill, thought and invention, with significant efforts going into getting the little things right.

It is also something very different to what you’ll see elsewhere in Vegas. Or, indeed, anywhere else in the world.

For those who accept that going to Las Vegas means you’ll spend a lot of money, and are cool with the idea of not fully understanding what they’ve just seen, Omega Mart is worth it.

Should I get Omega Mart tickets in advance?

Omega Mart works on a timed ticketing system. Rock up on the day and there’s a strong chance that you won’t get in for a while. It’s advisable to book your ticket and reserve your time slot in advance.
