What to see at the Latvian National Museum of Art

The museum is the largest depository of professional art in Latvia. The building is the first in the Baltic states designed specifically as an art museum. It is an architectural monument of national significance and one of the most impressive historicist buildings in Riga’s Boulevard Circle.

The Latvian Art 1780–1915 permanent exhibition shows the museum’s collection and the most outstanding achievements of national art from the late 18th century into the 20th century. It shows the history of how the collection was formed.

Latvian Art 1915–1940 covers the years after the First World War, when artists took up themes of refugees and riflemen. Jāzeps Grosvalds painted these subjects first. Jēkabs Kazaks, influenced by French painting, also depicted the dramatic events.

Latvian Modernists in Russia in the 1920s and 30s shows Latvian artists who stayed in Soviet Russia after 1917. They include Gustavs Klucis, Kārlis Johansons and Aleksandrs Drēviņš, who took part in the Russian avant-garde.

The museum’s collections cover painting, graphic art and sculpture. They include memorial collections of Jāzeps Grosvalds, Gustavs Šķilters and Teodors Zaļkalns.

The Great Exhibition Hall and the Cupola Hall host large temporary exhibitions, and the 4th floor has more exhibition halls.

The museum shop and restaurant are on the first floor. In summer an outdoor terrace overlooks the park.
