Mobile to Biloxi drive: Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge

The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge was set up in 1975 to protect the rare red-crested cranes that live there. There are thought to be around 130 of the species left.

But the refuge isn’t just about the birds – it’s about the habitat, too. It covers one of the last remaining large expanses of wet pine savanna in the US. Several walking trails lace through the refuge, while the distinctive local environment is explained in the Visitor Center.
