How to get to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

By car from Rotorua, drive south on State Highway 5, the Thermal Explorer Highway, for 27 kilometres until you reach the Waiotapu Tavern. Turn left opposite the tavern and drive 2 kilometres to the park. From Taupō, drive north on State Highway 5 for 53 kilometres, turn right where signposted and continue for 1 kilometre.

Parking at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Parking is ample at the Lady Knox Geyser site, with most spaces within about 100 metres of the arena. The Visitor Centre also has parking areas, so follow the signs. Mobility and special-needs parking is at the front of the Visitor Centre.

How long to spend at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Allow one and a half to three hours. The first walking loop takes about 45 minutes and covers many of the headline sights. All three loops together can take up to 90 minutes, and photo stops add time. Add the Lady Knox Geyser if you arrive before 10:15.

Accessibility at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Only one of the three walks is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. The longer loops include stairs and uneven ground. Mobility parking is at the front of the Visitor Centre.

There are no toilets in the main park or at the geyser. Use the Visitor Centre toilets before you enter the park.

What to see at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

The Lady Knox Geyser. A guide presents the geyser every day at 10:15. It erupts 10 to 20 metres high, and the team explains how it works.

The Champagne Pool. This hot spring is 65 metres across and about 74°C. Orange minerals ring the rim, and the water is vivid blue-green.
