The Z Bend Lookout is a lookout in Kalbarri National Park, near the town of Kalbarri on Western Australia‘s Coral Coast. It overhangs a bend in the Murchison River, which cuts a gorge through the red rock cliffs.
Where is the Z Bend Lookout?
The Z Bend Lookout is in the inland section of Kalbarri National Park, approximately 36km east of Kalbarri.
Note that it is not in the better-known Loop section of Kalbarri National Park, which contains Nature’s Window and the Kalbarri Skywalk. The Z Bend Lookout is a little further to the south, and accessed via a different road.
How to get to the Z Bend Lookout, Kalbarri
From the Z Bend car park, it’s a 600-metre walk to the Z Bend Lookout. This is a reasonably easy walk, but there are steps along the way.
Visitors with higher fitness levels may wish to consider a hike down into the gorge via the Four Ways Trail. This Class 4-graded walk is 6km return, and you should budget three to four hours for it, as the return leg of the hike is steep and tough going.
Z Bend Lookout entry fee
It doesn’t cost anything to visit the Z Bend Lookout in particular, but there is a $17 charge to visit the inland section of Kalbarri National Park. Fees can be paid at the Loop/Z-Bend entry station.

Things to do near Z Bend Lookout, Kalbarri
Nature’s Window and The Loop – The most iconic walk in Kalbarri National Park, around 5km north of the Z Bend along the same road. The 9km Loop Walk passes Nature’s Window, a natural rock arch perfectly framing the river below.
Kalbarri Skywalk – A pair of cantilevered viewing platforms over the Murchison River gorge, accessible from the same inland road as the Z Bend and included in the standard park entry fee.
Kalbarri coastal cliffs – The western section of the park (free entry) features dramatic sea cliffs more than 100 metres high, with formations including Island Rock, Natural Bridge and Red Bluff.
Murchison River sunset cruise – Several operators in Kalbarri run morning and sunset cruises along the lower Murchison River, offering a relaxed way to see the gorge, wildlife and birdlife from the water.
Kalbarri town foreshore – The Kalbarri waterfront has cafés, restaurants, a pelican-feeding session each morning, and easy access to Chinaman’s Beach and Blue Holes for swimming and snorkelling.
