How to get there

By car: Travel southwest from the town of Jasper on Connaught Drive, which becomes the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93). Cross the Miette River bridge and follow the directional sign to the SkyTram. Turn right onto Whistlers Road and drive 4km to the parking lot. The total drive is about 10 minutes from town.

By shuttle: Sundog Tours operates a daily shuttle from hotels in town and from the centre of Jasper directly to the SkyTram base station. A one-way ticket costs $6 and a return costs $10.

Note: There is no public transport to the SkyTram; a car or the Sundog shuttle are the only options.

Parking

Parking is free at the SkyTram base station for this Canadian cable car. Arrive early on busy summer days, since the lot can fill by mid-morning during peak season.

Accessibility

The SkyTram and the outdoor boardwalk at the Upper Station are accessible for most visitors. However, the Summit Café on the second floor of the Upper Station is not wheelchair accessible. The summit hiking trail above the boardwalk is a moderate-to-steep unpaved alpine path and isn’t suitable for most wheelchair users. Dogs are permitted on leash throughout the boardwalk and trail.

What to see from the Jasper SkyTram

The tram ride itself. A seven-minute ascent in an enclosed cabin staffed by a flight guide, who narrates the geology, flora, and history of the area as the valley floor drops away below.

The boardwalk and viewing platforms. Step off the tram into the high alpine zone at 2,263 metres, with panoramic views over the Athabasca Valley, the town of Jasper, and up to six mountain ranges on a clear day.

The Whistlers Summit Trail. A 1.4km hike from the Upper Station gains a further 200 metres of elevation to 2,463m, where the views on a clear day include Mount Robson — the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies — to the north.

Wildlife at altitude. Hoary marmots (whose whistle gave Whistlers Mountain its name), pikas, bighorn sheep, and Columbia ground squirrels are regularly spotted around the upper station and trail.

The Summit Café. A full-service restaurant on the second floor of the Upper Station, open with panoramic mountain views from 8:30am to 9pm in peak season, and with a separate three-course Dinner Package available by advance booking.

Practical visitor tips

Arrive 15–20 minutes earlyTickets are timed; latecomers may lose their slot, which is non-refundable.
Book for early morning or late eveningThe first rides and the golden-hour slots (after 6pm in summer) are the quietest and best-lit for photos.
Take the summit hike if you canThe additional 30–40 minute climb to the true peak is widely cited as the highlight of the entire experience.
