The Milky Way Tour walks 125 metres into the cave to the Milky Way Chamber. The Starburst Tour covers the same section and continues to the Starburst Cathedral, 250 metres in. Gift vouchers are available for either tour. Book early in summer, because tours can fill up. You can book through Viator for the 60-minute tour.
A direct booking can be cancelled up to 24 hours before the tour for a refund less 10% (minimum NZ$10) or a free reschedule. Cancellations within 24 hours are not refunded, but the park may reschedule you if possible. Bookings made through other platforms follow that platform’s rules.

How to get to the Milky Way Glowworm Cave
The farm park is on Waipu Caves Road, about 135 kilometres and just under two hours’ drive from Auckland. Three routes from State Highway 1 suit most visitors. From the north, turn onto Springfield Road at Oakleigh, about 16 kilometres from the park. From the east, leave SH1 near Ruakaka on Doctors Hill Road and follow Mountfield Road, about 11 kilometres. From the south, leave SH1 at Waipu on Shoemaker Road, about 10 kilometres.
The last stretch of Waipu Caves Road is gravel and crosses a one-lane wooden bridge. The main entrance, gate 1, is on the left after the bridge.
Parking at the Milky Way Glowworm Cave
There is a visitor car park at the farm park. Visitors with a physical impairment can park 50 metres from the cave entrance. Dogs are not allowed on the property, but they can stay in your vehicle for the length of a tour.
How long to spend at the Milky Way Glowworm Cave
Allow 90 minutes to two hours for the Milky Way Tour, including check-in. Allow two to two and a half hours for the Starburst Tour. The park also has more than 10 kilometres of walking tracks, which are free to use with a tour ticket.

The tour is on an easy access path, but it is not step-free. A gravel track runs 300 metres from the office through native bush to the cave. Inside, 30 steps lead down to a concrete path with stainless steel handrails.
The Milky Way Tour covers a total of 850 metres at a slow pace. The Starburst Tour covers 1.1 kilometres. Visitors with a physical impairment can park 50 metres from the cave entrance, which shortens the walk. Torches are provided, and you do not need a helmet.
