Inside the Gibbes Museum of Art: what to see

Opened in 1905 and holding more than 10,000 works of art, the Gibbes focuses on American art with a strong connection to Charleston and the broader South, spanning paintings, sculptures, photographs, decorative art objects and miniature portraits from the 18th century to the present day. The building itself, a century-old Beaux-Arts structure, is considered a notable work of architecture in its own right.

The Museum runs a changing programme of special exhibitions alongside its permanent collection, plus the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, awarded annually to recognise Southern artists. Beyond the galleries, visitors can explore the Lenhardt Garden, a classically landscaped space at the end of the main hallway, and watch artists at work in resident studio spaces along the Angela D. Mack Promenade.
