How to get to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum
The museum is in San Pedro, at the southern end of Los Angeles. It is about 25 miles south of downtown LA. By car, take the 110 South Freeway to Exit 1A for CA-47, then follow signs for Harbor Boulevard and turn onto 6th Street. Enter the GPS address as 600 Sampson Way, not the Berth 84 address, as the latter does not always map correctly.
The San Pedro Red Trolley runs on Fridays and weekends, stopping directly in front of the museum every 25 to 30 minutes. The Metro Silver Line runs south to San Pedro; check the Metro Trip Planner for the best connection from your starting point.
Parking at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum
The West Harbor North Lot, adjacent to the museum, is the closest paid car park. When the nearby San Pedro Fish Market is busy, this lot can reach capacity. In that case, an overflow car park (Lot 6) is available at no charge; a free trolley connects it to the museum on selected days of the week.
Free street parking is also available along Harbor Boulevard. Read parking signs carefully before leaving your vehicle, as restrictions vary by bay.
How long to spend at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum
Most visitors spend between one and two hours exploring the museum’s galleries. A shorter visit focused on one or two exhibits can be completed in under an hour.
Combining a visit with a walk along the West Harbor waterfront promenade, which runs from the museum to the south end of the new West Harbor development, adds time to a trip to San Pedro.
Accessibility at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum
The museum is committed to full website accessibility and states that it is working towards compliance with applicable accessibility standards. For in-person accessibility requirements, contact the museum directly at 310-548-7618.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The museum does not allow unattended children, and drop-offs are not permitted.
Inside the Los Angeles Maritime Museum: what to see
The museum is housed in a former ferry terminal building and covers the maritime history of the Port of Los Angeles and the wider Southern California coast. Current exhibits include Navy Hall, which covers the role of the US Navy in the region; Life at Sea, exploring the experience of merchant seafarers; and Tāminaru, which presents the history of Terminal Island’s Japanese American fishing community. The Caught, Canned, and Eaten exhibit covers the San Pedro cannery industry.
Other permanent exhibits include a commercial diving display, a kids’ exhibit, an Angels Gate lighthouse lens, and a large scale model of the Poseidon as used in the 1972 film. The K6AA Radio exhibit covers the museum’s own working amateur radio station.
A research library and archives are available for visitors with specific enquiries. A gift shop is on site.
