Castello di Vezio stands on the promontory above Varenna on Lake Como, a thousand-year-old medieval military watchtower surrounded by one of the northernmost olive groves in the world, botanical garden terraces, and panoramic views across the central lake basin.
This guide was updated in June 2026. The full admission is €7 — many aggregators and older guides still show €5 or €6. One significant correction: the falconry demonstrations are permanently discontinued following vandalism to the birds of prey in October 2022. Many guides, and some current aggregator listings, still describe falconry as a highlight. It is not. You can book through GetYourGuide in advance.

Why visit Castello di Vezio?
- 🏰 The finest elevated view on Lake Como: The castle stands on the highest promontory above the central lake — from the tower you can see both arms of the lake converging, with Bellagio’s peninsula, Menaggio, Tremezzina, and the Alps as backdrop. No other accessible viewpoint on the lake matches it.
- 🎟️ Evening openings until 22:30 in summer: On Fridays and Saturdays in June, July, and August, the castle stays open and illuminated until 22:30 (fine weather). This evening experience is absent from most travel guides and many visitors plan only daytime visits.
- 🌿 One of the northernmost olive groves in the world: The castle is surrounded by ancient olive trees that have grown here since at least the medieval period — unusual at this altitude and latitude — alongside a Mediterranean botanical garden that frames the lake views.
- 📜 The Lariosauro exhibition: A permanent exhibition in the castle covers the Lariosauro — the Triassic-era marine reptile discovered in the lake sediments of Lake Como. The reconstructed skeleton and fossil displays are a genuine surprise inside a medieval tower.
- 💰 No booking required — just walk in: Unlike most Lake Como attractions, the castle operates without timed entry, advance reservations, or booking fees. Walk up at any point during opening hours.
How to get to Castello di Vezio
From Varenna by foot (recommended): The most natural approach is on foot from Varenna, 15 minutes uphill along a clearly marked path. From the ferry landing in Varenna, follow Via Roma south then turn left at the signs for “Castello di Vezio” — a steady climb through olive groves and terraces. The path is well maintained but requires reasonable fitness.
By ferry, Navigazione Lago di Como stops at Varenna. Ferries run from Como (approximately 2 hours by slow boat or 45 minutes by fast ferry), Bellagio (10–15 minutes), and Menaggio (15 minutes). The Varenna-Esino railway station is also a short walk from the ferry.
By train, Varenna-Esino station is on the Milan–Sondrio line. From Milan Centrale, the journey takes approximately 1 hour. From the station, walk to the Varenna lakefront and then up to the castle.
By car, the SS36 lakeside road passes through Varenna. Parking in Varenna is very limited. The most practical approach for drivers is to park in the Varenna area (paid parking near the ferry) and walk up to the castle.
Parking at Castello di Vezio
There is no parking at this Italian castle itself — it is reached on foot from Varenna. Limited paid parking is available in the Varenna village and near the ferry landing, but spaces fill quickly in summer. Arriving by ferry from Bellagio or Menaggio and walking up is significantly more practical than driving.
How long to spend at Castello di Vezio
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours. The visit covers the furnished tower room, the Lariosauro exhibition, the botanical garden, the underground passages, the ghost statues scattered across the grounds, and the belvedere terrace. The garden and terraces reward slow exploration; visitors who take time with the views and the botanical plantings tend to stay the full 90 minutes. The castle bar (Punto di Ristoro) serves drinks and light refreshments with lake views.
Accessibility at Castello di Vezio
The approach on foot from Varenna involves a significant uphill path. The castle grounds themselves have some level areas but also stepped terraces and uneven stone surfaces. The site is not wheelchair accessible, and visitors with limited mobility should be aware the walk up from Varenna is steep. Contact the castle at [email protected] before visiting for current accessibility information.
What to see at Castello di Vezio
The tower and belvedere are the centrepiece. The medieval watchtower (the best-preserved structure on the site) rises above the garden terraces and can be climbed to the viewing platform — the panorama from the top, directly above the confluence of the two lake arms, is the most comprehensive view available from any accessible point on Lake Como. On clear days the Swiss Alps are visible across the water.
The Lariosauro exhibition is a permanent display inside the castle covering the discovery and significance of the Lariosauro — a Triassic-era (240 million years ago) marine reptile whose fossils were found in the limestone of the Lake Como area. The exhibit includes reconstructed skeletal models, geological context, and fossil specimens. This is consistently one of the least anticipated and most appreciated elements of the visit.
The underground passages give access to the basement levels of the medieval structure — original stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and the kind of physical encounter with medieval military architecture that surface-level visits rarely provide.
The ghost statues are figurative sculptures placed at various points around the garden — a whimsical and atmospheric installation that suits the dramatic setting. Combined with the castle’s reputation for spectral legends associated with Queen Teodolinda, they have become one of the most photographed elements of the visit.
The botanical garden and olive grove surround the castle walls with Mediterranean plantings — olives, lavender, rosemary, and seasonal flowers — that provide a complete contrast to the Alpine landscape immediately above. The garden is particularly beautiful in spring and early summer.
