How to get to Christoffel National Park
Christoffel National Park is on the north-west side of Curaçao, at Plantation House Savonet. From Willemstad, take Weg naar Westpunt and follow the signs. The drive takes about 35 to 45 minutes.
Public transport to the park is limited and infrequent, so a private or hire vehicle is recommended. The park’s entrance is along the same road as Shete Boka National Park, which comes into view first when driving from Willemstad.
Parking at Christoffel National Park
Parking is available at the park entrance, near the Savonet Museum and ticket office. Visitors are asked not to leave valuables in their car, to lock it, and to turn off the lights.
How long to spend at Christoffel National Park
The Christoffel Mountain climb takes 2 to 3 hours, including the walk and climb. Starting from the visitor centre takes about three hours to the top. Driving to the foot of the mountain first cuts this to about two hours.
The shorter trails take 20 minutes to 1.5 hours each, so a visit built around the museum and one or two shorter trails can be done in 1 to 2 hours. Combining several trails, the museum and a car route can fill most of a morning.
Accessibility at Christoffel National Park
The park’s hiking trails have loose, unlevelled gravel surfaces, so Carmabi recommends its two scenic car routes for visitors with a mobility impairment. Both the Northern Route and the Mountain Route are paved and can be driven in any car.
The bathroom, restaurant and museum are wheelchair accessible. Staff can assist visitors with special needs on request. Dogs are not allowed in the park, and it is a no-fly zone for drones.
What to see at Christoffel National Park
Christoffel Mountain is the highest point on Curaçao, at 372 metres. The climb passes through varied landscapes, with bromeliads, orchids, lichens and beard moss along the trail, and a wide view over the island from the top.
The park holds 8 hiking trails in total. Four are on the North Coast, or Savonet, side: the White Tailed Deer green, blue and yellow trails, and the red Boka Grandi trail. Three more, including the Zorgvlied and Zevenbergen trails, are on the mountain side.
The Savonet Museum, housed in a 19th-century plantation house, tells the story of the Savonet Plantation. It covers the area’s first inhabitants, the Arawak, through slavery, its abolition and Curaçao’s 2010 independence, focusing on the lives of the enslaved and later workers and their relationship with the plantation owners.
A newer permanent exhibition, Nos Naturalesa (“our nature”), covers local flora and fauna, including sea turtles, migratory birds and a skeleton of the Curaçao white-tailed deer, found nowhere else in the world.
Points of interest along the trails include the Zorgvlied ruins and a historical cactus hedgerow with a slave pole, a Saliña salt marsh, the 1693 Plantation Knip house, old copper mines, and several limestone caves.
Visitors can also explore two paved scenic car routes, the Northern Route and the Mountain Route, or join a ranger-led Jeep Safari.
