What to see at the Hato Caves
The climb to the cave entrance ends at a panoramic viewpoint over the park and the airport runway. The guided tour then goes about 124 metres into the cave and visits several chambers. The guide explains the history and cultural significance of the cave.
Inside are stalactites and stalagmites. Some formations take on shapes, and the guides tell stories about them, including the Sleeping Giant.
The cave also has a pool and a colony of rare bats hanging from the ceiling. A hole in the roof gives ventilation and natural light, and ventilators move air through the cave.
The Indian Trail is a self-guided walk through typical Curaçao vegetation. It shows carvings made by the Caiquetio people more than 1,500 years ago. The park says these carvings are found only in this area of the Caribbean and along the Orinoco river in South America.
The Cactus Garden shows the island’s native cacti. The park also has wildlife, including bats, iguanas, birds, tortoises and wild rabbits.
The state has protected the cave since 1967. It reopened as a tourist attraction on 15 December 1991 after damage from vandalism and misuse.
