Underground Valletta is a guided tour of tunnels, cisterns and Second World War shelters beneath Valletta, Malta. Visits are timed guided tours only, and tickets cost €15 for adults and €10 for every other visitor aged 6 and over.

Underground Valletta opening hours
Underground Valletta runs timed guided tours only, so it has no general opening hours. Heritage Malta’s terms list tours at 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm and 1 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays. Tours are in English and start strictly on time.
The booking page shows the available times for each date, so check it when you choose a day. Heritage Malta closes all its sites on 1 January, Good Friday, and 24, 25 and 31 December. The terms mention no seasonal changes to the tour times.
Visitors must meet at MUŻA in Merchants Street half an hour before the tour. Staff give a short briefing and hand out a bump cap and a head light. Lockers are provided. The group then walks to the site, which is less than 5 minutes away.

- If you cannot attend, email Heritage Malta at least 5 days before your visit to ask it to resell your ticket. It keeps a 20% administration fee.

Underground Valletta is not included in the Heritage Malta Multisite Pass, so no pass inclusions apply.
How to get to Underground Valletta
The tour starts and ends at MUŻA, in the Auberge d’Italie on Merchants Street. Heritage Malta says the closest bus stop is 2 minutes on foot. The terms also say MUŻA is a 5-minute walk from the Valletta bus terminus.
Ferries to Valletta also run from Gozo, the Three Cities and Sliema.
Parking at Underground Valletta
Heritage Malta’s terms say parking in Valletta is allowed in white boxes at all times. Blue boxes are allowed from 7 am to 7 pm, and Controlled Vehicular Access charges apply. Public and private car parks are also just outside Valletta.
How long to spend at Underground Valletta
The guided tour takes about 1 hour underground. Add the 30-minute meeting time at MUŻA and the walk of under 5 minutes to the site. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the whole visit. Heritage Malta says a tour has a maximum of 15 people.
Accessibility at Underground Valletta
Underground Valletta has limited accessibility. Heritage Malta’s terms say handrails are in place, but the site is inaccessible to wheelchairs and to visitors who need walking aids. Access is by steps.
Humidity is very high, and some areas are slippery. Visitors must wear closed, comfortable shoes and hold the handrails. Heritage Malta does not admit visitors in high heels, sandals or flip flops.
The site is dark and underground. By buying a ticket, visitors confirm that they are in good health and free from panic attacks or claustrophobia. Some areas may have loud sounds or flashing lights that can disturb sensitive visitors.
What to see at Underground Valletta
The tour shows how Valletta used the space beneath it. Heritage Malta describes Valletta as built first as a fortress and then as a city. Its underground was the city’s lifeline.
Tunnels carried troops and stored grain. Underground spaces also supported water supply and drainage. Both were vital during a siege and in peacetime.
A new burst of digging came in the Second World War. Heritage Malta says 17,000 tonnes of bombs fell on Malta. Valletta’s population moved into a dense network of shelters.
These shelters expanded existing tunnels and cisterns. The tour presents this as a story of desperation and resistance.
A guide leads the group, and visitors wear a bump cap and head light. MUŻA has its own tickets, so a visit to the museum is separate from the tour.
