The Mansion’s main-level formal rooms, including the Pink Drawing Room, show where the Dooleys entertained Richmond’s social elite, filled with fine art and decorative objects collected on their world travels. On the second floor, Sallie Dooley’s Swan Bedroom remains a centrepiece, with its swan bed, Louis Vuitton trunk and a Tiffany dressing table crafted with sterling silver and narwhal tusks.
Following the recent preservation project, James Dooley’s belongings have been moved into a larger space that reflects how the room was used for most of the couple’s residence, including his Georgetown academic medals and an Egyptian-themed dressing table. A painting that had been in storage for around 50 years has also been rehung in the morning room.
Belowstairs, the “In Domestic Service” exhibition explores the lives of the Dooleys’ domestic staff, nearly all African American, through eight restored period rooms including the kitchen, wine cellar, laundry and butler’s pantry. Outside, the Carriage House displays more than 20 horse-drawn vehicles from the estate’s original Carriage Collection.
