What to see at the Veterans Memorial Museum

Unlike the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC and the World War II Museum in New Orleans, the Branson Veterans Memorial Museum is often more celebratory than commemorative,

“Storming the Beach,” the world’s largest bronze war memorial sculpture, depicts 50 life-size soldiers landing on a beach, each modeled after a real combat veteran from one of the 50 states. The City of Branson purchased the piece in 2016 to display it prominently on Highway 76.

A restored Huey UH-1C helicopter, which flew in Vietnam, and a full-size WWII P-51 Mustang Fighter Plane both stand outside the museum, doubling as its most recognisable landmarks.

Inside, ten great halls move visitors chronologically through WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and other 20th-century conflicts, filled with uniforms, weapons, letters, medals, and even a battlefield organ and motorcycles.

The memorial walls, lining each hall, carry more than 500,000 names of American service members killed in action, from WWII through the USS Cole bombing.

The Tuskegee Airmen painting, titled “Red-Tails Strike Again,” is one of several combat murals throughout the museum honouring specific units and campaigns.
