Berlin to Prague by train: A realistic day trip?

The Berlin to Prague train timetable makes a day trip possible, with tickets costing from €18.99. But it’s better to turn the two cities into a twin centre holiday.

City breaks in Berlin and Prague

Berlin and Prague are two of Europe’s great city break destinations, and they have very different characters. The German and Czech capitals are also close enough to turn into a twin centre holiday.

You can enjoy Berlin experiences such as canoeing along the Berlin Wall, Third Reich walking tours, Spree River cruises and the DDR Museum, then head south.

Once in Prague, activity options include food tours, guided visits to the biggest castle in the world or communism and nuclear bunker tours.

But if you’re pressed for time, can you realistically do a day trip to Prague from Berlin or vice versa?

Prague day trip from Berlin

Well, theoretically, a day trip to Prague from Berlin is possible. According to the Trainline, the quickest trains from Berlin to Prague take three hours and 51 minutes. If you take the first train in the morning and the last train back in the evening, the Berlin to Prague day trip is possible. But it’s exhausting and includes too much travelling time to be worth the effort.

However, this sort of price is for limited departures. For an early morning departure, tickets on the Berlin to Prague train cost €39.99 at least – and more if you book the night before.

Therefore, going from Berlin to Prague by train as a day trip is both expensive and time-consuming. You’re far better off extending the trip by a couple of days, staying in Prague, then flying back from the Czech capital.
