Five great things to do in Cairns

How long to spend at Birdworld Kuranda

Most visitors spend 60 to 90 minutes inside Birdworld Kuranda. The paved loop path through the aviary can be completed in around 45 minutes, but most visitors pause to hand-feed birds, photograph them, and observe specific species. Allow an additional 15 minutes if purchasing and using bird feed from the front counter.

Visitors combining Birdworld with the adjacent Kuranda Koala Gardens (next door) and the nearby Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (100 metres away) should allow a full half-day or more. All three attractions are within easy walking distance of each other inside Kuranda village.

Accessibility at Birdworld Kuranda

The entire Birdworld Kuranda aviary is accessed via a paved pathway, making it suitable for wheelchair users, prams, and mobility scooters. Multiple visitor reviews confirm that wheelchair access throughout the attraction is easy and obstacle-free. There are no stairs or uneven terrain within the aviary.

There is no lift access required to enter the attraction. Accessible toilets are available within the Kuranda Heritage Markets. Visitors who are sensitive to birds landing on them, or who have balance concerns, should note that birds may perch on visitors’ shoulders and heads without warning; staff provide guidance on how to manage this.

Inside Birdworld Kuranda: what to see and do

The main free-flight aviary is the central experience. Over 350 birds representing almost 60 species roam freely within a large, netted rainforest enclosure featuring ponds, waterfalls, mist fans, and a mix of exotic and native plants. Birds have regular contact with humans and are very tame; visitors can expect birds to land on their shoulders, arms, and heads without prompting.

Bird species on display include Amazonian macaws (blue, gold, and scarlet), rainbow lorikeets, galahs, cockatoos, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Australian Eclectus Parrots, Black Cockatoos, King Parrots, and many more. Waterbirds including stilts, herons, and Black Swans are housed around the ponds. A species identification handout is provided on entry.

The Southern Cassowary is housed in a separate, secure enclosure within the aviary. This individual — a male named Jimmy — is an endangered species and one of the attraction’s most significant residents. Close viewing is possible from the pathway. The cassowary is also the focus of the Bespoke Birdworld pre-opening experience.

The Finch Aviary is a dedicated section within Birdworld containing over 10 species of small, colourful finches. It provides a quieter contrast to the main aviary and is a highlight for bird photographers.

Hand feeding is available throughout the main aviary. Bird feed can be purchased from the front counter on entry. Feeding is unguided and informal — birds will approach visitors holding food throughout the walk.

The Bespoke Birdworld experience is a pre-opening guided tour for a maximum of 6 guests, commencing at 9:30am. It is led by a keeper and includes hand-feeding the cassowary, parrots, lorikeets, and other birds their morning breakfast. This experience must be booked by 1:00pm the previous day and cannot be purchased at the gate.

Practical visitor tips

TipDetail
Cover or remove dangling earringsParrots and lorikeets are attracted to shiny objects and will attempt to remove earrings from visitors’ ears. The attraction provides tape on entry to cover earrings; bring your own if you prefer. Loose jewellery and lanyards should also be secured.
Arrive at opening or in the late afternoonThe aviary is busiest between 11:00am and 2:00pm, particularly when tour groups and Skyrail/Scenic Railway visitors arrive. Arriving at 10:00am or after 2:30pm gives a quieter experience with more relaxed bird behaviour.
Buy bird feed at the entranceSeed cups are sold at the front counter and significantly increase interaction with the birds. Purchase feed before entering the aviary rather than deciding once inside.
Use burst mode for photographyBirds move quickly and rarely hold still. Using burst mode on any camera or smartphone produces far better results than single shots. A lens cloth is useful for misting-fan spray on the lens.
Allow time for the other Kuranda wildlife attractionsKuranda Koala Gardens is immediately adjacent to Birdworld and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is within 100 metres. Combination tickets offer better value than individual entry and allow visitors to see three distinct wildlife experiences in one visit.
