Four great places to eat and drink in Prague

After repeated visits to Prague over the last two decades, I’ve learned that the best places to eat in the Czech capital aren’t always immediately obvious. Elsewhere on the site, I’ve written about where to drink in Prague away from the tourist traps. But for a quick blast of recommendations, here are four of my favourites Prague bars and restaurants.

Unpasteurised pilsner in Staré Mesto

It’s one of the world’s great beer capitals – so do you start off with a microbrewery or ultra-fresh unpasteurised pilsner straight from the tank? Well, U Medvidku in Staré Mesto is one of the rare places that does both – and in an atmospheric 15th century house with painted wood ceilings, too.

Authentic Czech food in Mala Strana

Mala Strana is the most romantic area of Prague – but it’s also home to a lot of embassies, which makes for a clutch of high quality restaurants not entirely reliant on the tourist trade, such as U Modre Kachnicky. The elaborately painted wooden doors and walls are a giant artwork, and the menu is unapologetically focused on hearty duck dishes – like the roast duck with apples, raisings, honey and gratinated potato.

Beer tasting in Vinohrady

Gentle, leafy Vinohrady is free of the city centre’s rowdy stag parties, and hums to the tune of amiable local chatter rather than fuelled-up bellowing. The incredibly misleadingly-named Prague Beer Museum is a chilled-out traditional pub that stays just the right side of old man-ish, with 30 admirably varied beers on tap. Try the Two Tales Bohemian – a smoothly hoppy Czech take on an IPA.

Central European tapas in Vinohrady

To up the energy stakes, try exposed brick, open kitchen cellar joint Kofein in Vinohrady, which does a Central European take on tapas and Czech wines. The wild boar leg with raspberries and potato dumpling is a guilty treat, and glasses of Moravian pinot gris are good bet for washing it down.
