Why Rhodes is a great cruise destination to explore independently

The location of the Rhodes cruise terminal next to the city walls makes the largest of the Dodecanese Islands ideal for exploring without a shore excursion.

The best Greek Island for cruisers?

There’s a strong argument for Rhodes being the best Greek Island that cruise ships visit. This is partly because the largest of the Dodecanese chain is drenched in history. But it’s mainly because it’s so accessible.

How far is the Rhodes cruise port from the city?

Many cruise ports require a shuttle bus or ferry to get to the main town. Getting from the cruise terminal to the town in Mykonos, for example, requires a short ferry journey. In Kusadasi, meanwhile, it’s a good 35 minute coach trip to the gates of Ephesus or the House of the Virgin Mary.

This is not the case with Rhodes. Even the biggest ships pull up within a five minute walk of the city walls.

Rhodes shore excursions vs independent exploration

There are dozens of shore excursions available in Rhodes. If you want to visit the Kalithea Springs or Kritinia Castle, you’re best off taking one of them. However, Rhodes Town is the island’s real star, and the proximity of the cruise port makes it easy to explore independently.

What to do in Rhodes Town

This, therefore, is the port where you’re best off ditching the guided tours. Enjoy ambling through the shops and cafés of the medieval city. Walk along the city walls. Venture into the Palace of the Grand Master or get an education inside the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.
