Planning a visit to Williams, Arizona

Williams, Arizona, is one of the more appealing stops on Route 66. It has something of an Old West feel, plus enough restaurants, cafés and bars to keep things interesting as an overnight stop.

It’s also home to the Grand Canyon Railway, the Canyon Coaster and the Bearizona Wildlife Park – arguably the best place in Arizona to see bears.

Williams is also a popular base for exploring the Grand Canyon – it’s a 60 mile drive away from the South Rim.

Best road trip stops between Las Vegas and Williams, AZ

If you’re travelling from Las Vegas to Williams, AZ, there are a couple of stops worth considering along the way.

The star attraction is Hoover Dam, one of the world’s greatest ever engineering feats. You can stop for photos on the dam wall, or go inside the maze of concrete on a guided tour. Hoover Dam is a 35 minute drive from Las Vegas.

However, on the way to Hoover Dam, you can also stop at Lake Mead, and take a cruise through the desert.

Continuing south-east along US-93, there’s a rest area with a scenic view over the Colorado River near Willow Beach. But otherwise it’s a drive through often dramatically stark desert before you join the I-40 in Kingman.

Las Vegas to Williams drive: Kingman, Seligman and Ash Fork

Kingman is the other logical stop on the Las Vegas to Williams drive, although it’s not nearly as attractive as Williams. There are some pretty cool pieces of mural art around the historic Route 66 road, however, plus a handful of decent places to get food and drink.

In terms of attractions in Kingman, local history is covered at the Mohave Museum of History and Arts, while the Arizona Route 66 Museum majors in nostalgia. Neither are in any way must-sees.

It’s another 113 miles from Kingman to Arizona, with Seligman being the best snack and toilet stop on the way, although there is another small Route 66 Museum in Ash Fork.
