Five great things to do in the Algarve

Núcleo Islâmico ticket prices

Admission to the Islamic Museum alone costs €2 for adults. Concession-rate tickets (€1) are available for students, young people aged 8–18, and adults aged 65 or over. Children under 8 enter free.

A combined ticket covering both the Núcleo Islâmico and the Palácio da Galeria (the main Museu Municipal de Tavira building, a five-minute walk away) costs €3 for adults and €1.50 for concessions. Combined tickets are valid for seven days from purchase, making it practical to split visits across two days.

Tickets are purchased on the door and no advance booking is required.

Opening hours and ticket prices were checked on the official museum website and last updated in April 2026.

How to get to the Núcleo Islâmico

The museum is centrally located on Praça da República, Tavira’s main riverside square, and is within easy walking distance of most accommodation in the town centre.

By train: Tavira railway station is served by the Faro–Vila Real de Santo António regional line. The station is approximately a 10–15 minute walk from Praça da República. Services run regularly from Faro (journey time approximately 40 minutes) and from Vila Real de Santo António (approximately 30 minutes).

By bus: EVA Transportes and Rede Expressos operate bus services to Tavira from Faro, Olhão, and other Algarve towns. Buses stop near the town centre.

Parking at the Núcleo Islâmico

There is no dedicated parking at the museum. Praça da República itself has very limited parking and spaces are difficult to find during busy periods. Visitors arriving by car are advised to use car parks on the edge of the town centre, such as those near the bus station, and walk in. Most central attractions are within 10–15 minutes on foot from peripheral parking areas.

How long to spend at the Núcleo Islâmico

Plan for 30–45 minutes to view the permanent collection at a comfortable pace. Visitors who stop to read the introductory film and study the detailed panel information may take closer to an hour. The museum is small, with a focused collection spread across two or three levels. If combining the visit with the Palácio da Galeria, allow an additional 45–60 minutes for that building.

Accessibility at the Núcleo Islâmico

The Núcleo Islâmico has been awarded the TUR4all accessibility badge, which recognises a commitment to visitors with accessibility needs. The museum is housed in a modern building constructed around archaeological remains. Visitors with specific accessibility requirements are advised to contact the museum directly on +351 281 320 570 before visiting to confirm current facilities.

Inside the Núcleo Islâmico – what to see

The permanent exhibition “Tavira Islâmica”, inaugurated in February 2012, displays one of Portugal’s most important collections of Islamic-period archaeological finds. Objects were recovered from excavations across Tavira, including at the Convento da Graça and Palácio da Galeria sites.

The Tavira Vase (Vaso de Tavira) is the collection’s centrepiece: an 11th-century ceramic vessel decorated with figures and animals around the rim. It is one of the most significant Islamic ceramic finds in Portugal.

Other permanent exhibits include a section of the 12th-century Islamic city wall (constructed using a technique called Taipa Ciclópica), a caliphal capital, an inkwell, ablution basins, and a wide range of domestic pottery including cooking pots, plates, and bowls. A short introductory film provides context in multiple languages.

The upper floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, typically on themes connected to local history and heritage. A rooftop terrace offers open views over the town centre.

Exhibit panels are primarily in Portuguese. Printed multilingual guides in English, French, and Spanish are available free of charge from the reception desk. QR codes are provided on some panels for additional content in Arabic.

Practical visitor tips

Tip
Arrive before 12:30 if you want unhurried time before the 13:00 lunch closure.
Ask for a printed English guide at reception before entering the main galleries, as signage is predominantly in Portuguese.
The museum closes for lunch from 13:00 to 14:00 each day; plan your arrival to avoid reaching the door during this window.
Buy the combined ticket if you intend to visit both the Núcleo Islâmico and the Palácio da Galeria – it saves €1 per adult and is valid for seven days.
The museum is small, so peak summer crowds rarely cause queuing; however, weekday mornings are quieter than weekend afternoons.
