What is the DDR Museum?
The DDR Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Berlin. The museum tells of life in communist East Germany during the Cold War, and is packed with memorabilia from the era.
The content is not as relentlessly grim as you might expect – although there are parts that cover state oppression and spying. The DDR Museum looks at the scratchy clothing East Germans wore as they couldn’t get international brands from the West, as well as things such as Baltic Sea beach holidays, Trabant cars and sport.
DDR Museum opening hours
The opening hours of the DDR Museum are 9am to 9pm. This is quite significant as these opening hours are more expansive than those of other Berlin museums. The Altes Museum on neighbouring Museum Island, for example, is usually open from 10am to 5pm or 6pm.
Why visit the DDR Museum early
This is a good reason to make the DDR Museum your first stop on a day out in Berlin. Book your ticket in advance, get there when the museum opens at 9am, then tackle other attractions when they open later.
The other reason to go at 9am is that the DDR Museum can get notoriously crowded and, frankly, not very pleasant to be in.
Why visit the DDR Museum late
The second option is to visit the DDR Museum a lot later in the day, once most of the other visitors have already been and gone. Visit at around 7pm, and the DDR Museum will be significantly quieter as most people have finished their sightseeing for the day.
On the flipside, if you’ve been out at other museums and attractions in Berlin all day, it’s quite likely that your brain will be fried by then.
